This was the view from the deck of my camp back in NY last week. I have a couple of days at home before I’m back at work. Being on the water just rejuvenates my soul.

I’m in Indy, at my parents’ place. The horses are in the barn chilling. One has an abscess on his foot and hasn’t been roaming as much lately. But they’ll be out later. We’ve been getting fabulous green beans from the garden, and summer squash, but the corn and tomatoes aren’t quite there yet. My daughter’s at camp with her cousins, and I have a quiet morning to get some work done and enjoy the peace.

That’s fantastic. My wife feels the same as you. Her idea of heaven is the family cottage on the lake in Michigan. Especially in the morning when no wake rules are still in effect.

Not a great picture, but this was the last vacation I had, taken from our villa at Rockhouse.

Wait — “quiet morning to get some work done”? That’s not right! The picture does look idyllic, though - enjoy!

Me and the kids in NW FL a few weeks ago. I found a 10' three-ply inflatable rowboat on Amazon last winter and we finally got to put it through the paces. Sea turtles, giant rays, a couple small sharks. It totally changes the beachgoing experience. I highly recommend this over kayaks, etc, especially if you have 3+ people to take with you...and you don’t feel like spending $100/day for a rental. These boats are $60-$130, FWIW.

Thats good enough to soothe the soul. Great view.

Also, you have a villa? WTF?! When were you going to have an Oppo house party? Cause you’re nominated.

Oh well, what’s a vacation if you don’t bring some work to procrastinate from, right?

Oh, the vegetable garden is out of view ( maybe I’ll post that later). What you see is one of my mom’s rose gardens. It’s her thing since she grew up in a family owned florist business. But I’ll tell her you said it was a lazy attempt. ;)

Oh jesus no - this was ours for a week . Nothing more, although I’m sure with enough cash Rockhouse would let someone buy it.

I’ve been seriously considering one of those to go out on the lake near our house. Beautiful family, and great adventure!

That’s okay. We’ll just default to Ben’s beach house. You bring the pickles.

On second thought, don’t.

As long as you’re not letting it hang over your head, yeah - it’s awful when you let it get to you (been there).

So my family did a similar thing when we went to Tours, France. We rented a stone cottage in a rural area with a big stone fireplace and huge kitchen table. We made big dinners and drank lots of good wine. Setting is important, but the most important ingredient is always family.

Good advice. Yeah, I set pretty lax goals for myself.

As you should for a vacation. I’m completely swamped (yet screwing around on Oppo...), but taking Thursday off because Oshkosh. Not even bringing that work cell phone - people think I’m nuts for carrying 2 phones, but days like that are exactly why I do it. Bring the personal phone, leave the work phone on my desk.

Got one phone. I’m currently answering work emails from my lab folk right now. That’s fine. I can quit anytime I want. No really.

Thanks, it definitely exceeded my expectations. I don’t know how much mobility you have, but I had no trouble sitting on the floor with my back against a bolster while rowing. Very stable and easy. We even had it in some 3'-5' swells with heavy chop, no problem (except the wife got seasick).

Poor momma. That’s what overboard if for I guess.

I’ve been canoeing before. So I’m sure I could do it. I find swells to be fun.

The Gulf of Mexico is awesome. It’s like a lake/ocean hybrid — just enough movement to be interesting, great clarity, but not too rough. Awesome seafood, great people, sort-of-reasonable rental prices. I know you’re near Indy right now, just take I-65 another ~10 hours south, can’t miss it :D

Ha! Yeah, I’ve spent time on the Atlantic and gulf coasts. Much prefer the vibe on the gulf side.
